Muéstrame tus Dientes (Show me your Teeth!)As a big group, we went to Inmaculado Corazón de María in Sapallanga. There are about 500 students total who go to school here but we only saw the morning group (kids go to school for a half day). Since we had volunteers from Davíd, Elena, and some of Carlos's house at the school, we were able to get to all of the students!
We started off with a presentation in each room about how to brush your teeth and the importance of dental health. We let the Spanish speakers take on this portion!
Then other volunteers would go in and fluoride the children's teeth. I can't even count the number of cavities and missing teeth I saw. These kids definitely needed some fluoride to help protect their remaining teeth.
The children here were all smiles as we asked them to show off their new clean teeth!!
Central Market (again)
I told you I'd be back! Erin and I took Lauren with us to explore the central market. I purchased some carrots and aguaymanto but drooled over the rest of the veggies. That's one thing I really miss... Veggies! I can't wait to be home and eat raw and steamed vegetables. We don't eat any here bc it's very easy to get sick from them.
Dr Franćois on Child Neglect
One of Dr Franćois passions is educating medical personnel on signs of child neglect and child abuse. He became interested in this field due to a chance meeting of another doctor. Together Dr Franćois and Dr Knox have been working to acquire better research on child neglect. It was a very interesting presentation to say the least and introduced me to some psychology articles that I want to look a little more into.
Coqui Café
As you may have noticed our internet is very spotty, so one of the girls in our house found a cute coffee shop with free wifi right by the Plaza de Constitución. They serve excellent coffee and cake which makes for a great after dinner place to go!
